if i paid a £50 deposit a few years ago which was to be refundable at the end of the contract, can a company change the rules and claim they now need to retain part of this for admin costs?

Not without you accepting the new version of the contract.
However if the contract stipulated that admin charges could apply or be introduced they may be able to charge you the costs.0
