access to internet via a lap top

hi all ,
please be patient with me because i know nothing about what im asking help for .
Im thinking of buying a lap top and would want access to the intenet(whilst watching t.v ha ha ) at the moment i have broadband with virgin media which i want to keep . what do i need to access the internet using a lap top , wireless, router , dongle i've heard all those names but have no idea what they do .
please help to explain if you would .

Buying todays laptop you will find they will connect straight away with non of the items you have named, <what ever they are>, just so long as you have a a broadband "wireless router" supplied by Virgin, you are good to go.0
