Bsod

Wierd one, my daughter, back from uni, went to print on the Brother laser. Got BSOD. Transferred to canon inkjet on usb, all fine. Back to laser and insert usb lead and BSOD. Changed lead, same again. Dell 530 and 30gig hd very nearly full. Pen drive in dell worked ok so its not likely the ports as tried them all. Any thoughts? Ran malwarebytes and Avira as they had not been updated and run since last home.
XP on update 2, will get it up to 3 when she has all the Uniwork on disk.

maybe the brother is drawing more power through the usb than the PSU can cope with? unplug all non-essential usb devices and yry again...if you have a powered USB hub try through that

Good thought, would this still apply if the Brother was the only thing pluggrd into Usb? Laptop was running on mains power.

My advise would be to remove all USB attached devices and then reboot. If you are still getting a BSOD try pressing F8 during startup and then go to the Last Known Good Configuration.

Should this fail reboot to safe mode (Press F8 at startup) and select system restore. (Click NO at the prompt, logic would say different).

If you still have a BSOD PM me and I'll do my best to help.

The laser printer won't be drawing "anything" through the USB as the power a Laser needs will be far in excess of the 500mW the max that a USB port can put out.

Have you tried the usual suspects like uninstalling the driver and downloading a newer copy and trying again?

When it blue screens once it's rebooted have a look in event manager and see what it says in there at the time of the BSOD

If not if you can try to get info from the BSOD screen and post it up

Thanks, I'll try to get message up. She now tells me the bsod also happens with her HP laser at uni so I am not sure if its the driver but I'll try a reinstall and see. Unsure where event manager is.
Tried booting up with Brother connected and it blue screens before XP has fully loaded.
Tried safe mode and last good configuration but not system restore. I'll try that later.

Can`t really help with this but just to add that when I suffered a fatal BSoD,I lost almost everything on the PC.
It taught me the lesson of backup, backup, backup and I bought an external hard drive and backup every day now.

Luckily her exams are over, just a 3 month placement in September and a dissertation and its all over. Have you tried telling a student to back up everything? Far more interesting things on Facebook to take any notice of an old wrinkly. Still, guess who she runs to when it all goes t**s up?

Edit:- just plugged printer cable into usb port, printer turned off, bsod. Plugged in card reader to same port, ok. changed cable to printer bsod. Will try to link to picture of screen in a mo.

You can get an external for under £25 and download a free program to automatically back up your important documents every time you boot-up.

Got acronis and an external hard drive, you can take a horse to water but you can't make it drink.
