I want to get a new car (well new to me), budget is about £5,000 and I want something that is a reasonable size (but not too big) as we are hoping to start a family.
What would you recommend? I was wondering about something like a Honda Civic, Golf or Polo (although I'm not sure of boot size)..
Does anyone have any advice or suggestions etc?

Do you plan to conceive in the vehicle? In memory of Chris Hyde #8670 -
I do love a Volkeswagen.
but if you are planning a family whatever you do make sure it's a 5 door. Nothing worse than trying to struggle to put kids in via front seat being folded down.I have a gift for enraging people, but if I ever bore you it'll be with a knife Louise BrooksAll will be well in the end. I can recommend VW's. I have a VW Polo which is now nearly 8 years old (2001). I bought it when it was about 3.5 years old. Had 20,000 on it when I bought it and it now has 120,000! It did cost a bit for a second hand car (£6,000) it was an approved second hand VW bought from a VW garage near Birmingham. Its been an excellent car and is very reliable, never had any big bills just general wear and tear things. Servicing is pricey if you use VW dealers but there are some great independent garages around that just specalise in servicing VW's and Audis and I have found these to be pretty good. My mum has a VW Polo (1996) which she has had from new and its still going strong as is my friends Polo who has one the same age as Mums.
Only thing I would say if you are thinking about starting a family is that you have to be careful as to whether or not a pram fits in the boot. A guy I work with has just had a baby (well his wife has!) and he has a 2005 VW Golf. Apparently the pram only just fits!
