What car should I buy?

I want to get a new car (well new to me), budget is about £5,000 and I want something that is a reasonable size (but not too big) as we are hoping to start a family.

What would you recommend? I was wondering about something like a Honda Civic, Golf or Polo (although I'm not sure of boot size)..

Does anyone have any advice or suggestions etc?

Probably pick up a second generation zetec model with under 50k for that and 3 years old.

Civic and Golf have higher residual values so you wont get as much for your money. Polo is quite a small car - certainly a size down on the other two you have listed.
