Computer cant see router

I've got a Thompson tg585 v7 router but the computer using XP cant see it.Tiscali sent a installation cd but I cant connect with it.I am getting error "Static DNS Entry" error which I've googled;no useful info available.I've been in touch with Tiscali who told me to change the DNS server to specific address rather than, automatic find, but this has not helped.Thing is I have dual booted with Ubuntu 9 and it works straight away ubuntu. When I contacted Tiscali again they gave me the local IP address of the router as 192.168.1.254 so as I could change the security settings but XP just dosnt see the router.I checked out Microsofts Windows XP hardware compatabilty list which dosnt appear to be working.
Usually when I plug in a printer or ipod ,there is a New device detected baloon .Anybody know how I can get XP to see the router ?

I can't help specifically but is your windows/third party firewall blocking access
to your router. Have you tried adjusting your settings for your PC network interface
TCP/IP settings to obtain IP address automatically and also obtain DNS server
address automatically ? Do you have a choice of network sockets with your
computer? You may have to reboot to see any effect.
    J_B.
From a command prompt (ie. Start Menu -> Run->Cmd ) does Ping 192.168.1.254
return a reply or a request timeout?
Type ipconfig /all at the command prompt to get an idea of the ip addresses and general network configuration that your windows setup is using.

    ..and also...

have you checked in your device manager to see if your network card is correctly installed ?? It may be worth unisnstalling it, then rebooting the pc and letting windows reinstall it

Best thing to do is to get the IP address of your computer and the gateway it's using.
    Either:
Press and hold the windows key and R
    Or:
Click the start button then select run

You'll see a small box in the bottom left that you can type in.
    Type: cmd
and press enter, and a new window will appear.
    Type: ipconfig/all
and you'll get some details of the network card (assuming it's installed)
the final step is to take the numbers beside the gateway line (192.168.0.1 or similar) and type them as a URL in to internet explorer
    Like: http://192.168.0.1
    and press enter.

I have set zonealarm to allow DHCP which the ISP talked about and I added the standard Local IP 192.168.1.254 specific to my version of router Thompson tg585 v7;but I'm still getting the Static DNS entry error.I do have a handy program SIW [System information for windows] which under Network connections states DHCP is not connected though, and under DHCP Server it says N/A [Not any] what ever that means; I have set up a New internet connection and changed some of the properties and advance settings to best of my limited knowledge but I cant find much about Dhcp there. The new connection was under WAN as opposed to the reccomened LAN but I cant see where to change this.

you also need to set your router for DHCP....another foray into your router settings is needed, I think.....
