Help!!! Recovering deleted files.

Hi, is there any free software that will recover hard drive files after a disk format?

In short, my laptop went into meltdown this morning and the only option it gave me was a complete recovery. Unfortunately, my carefully backed up files were deleted a few days ago when handing our main computer over to one of the kids, so I've *lost* all my photos, docs, music etc.

no there isnt unless you have a military grade budget and resources?

    lol

    a format is exactly that

    byebye data

i woulld look into your back up

basically when you delete and empty the recycle bune, windows doesnt actually delete the file, it simply leaves it there and uses the space when needed

so stop using you other computer asap and download this

    http://www.uneraser.com/undelete.htm

DO NOT INSTALL TO THE COMPUTER

everytime you save something on the computer you risk losing more of your data, instead save it to a memory card or stick if you can and install it in that

if you cannot then you will have to use your computer to save it as usual

you should be able to get a good amount of your data back
    Back by no demand whatsoever.

If it was a full format (not quick) performed by Vista then theirs no chance of getting that data back as Vista writes 0's to the disk, and one wipe is enough to completely destroy the data (see here)

Otherwise, www.runtime.org is another one you can try, there's a whole list on that above link at the bottom too :)

runtime software GetDataBack is pretty good but can cost $70 (I think) However - I bought it around 4 months ago to work on a PC for a friend and it recovered pretty much all his files incl filestructure.

You can download a demo version from their site and see if it will have any luck. It's worth noting that you can't run it on the disk you want to recover data from. As a suggestion, install the demo on the kids machine and plug the target hard disk in as a secondary HDD

If you're stuck, PM me as I've got the software and a USB cable for the disks and I could give it a try for you. (Only if it was XP or vista though - I only got the NTFS version :) )

PS - If you're using the PC now, stop as you may be overwriting files that could be recovered.

Consider the 'mechanics' reaction to your predicament. ** Scratches Chin ** It's gonna cost ya! If and it's a big IF the recovery specialists can recover your data ( I've known them to charge £300 just to tell you they cant) then you need to look at the importance vs cost of the data.

Welcome to the 'Once Bitten' crew. You will always backup your data in future.....

If it doesn't cost and you are lucky enough to find a freebie version of software somewhere, the time spent on recovery will be..... well..... you tell me.....

Thanks all, I've tried a few things and it's well and truly gone. I'll just chalk it up to experience this time I think.

    What he said...

Run the demo version and it will at least tell you if there's anything to recover.

For future, I think tesco are selling 250-320GB hard disks for around £50
