You lose ALL of BT-branded services (and prices) when you switch, so in the absence of any other offer you'll be charged the standard PO rate for the service (along with any other service you offer).

I read online that if you have already caller id with bt the service will work when you switch to post office landline without paying the usual fees of £1.71....could it be true?!?

That's true at the moment but remember that only BT has to allow such access. Other providers can bar such access whenever they like.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Should they ever change their policy in future, as there is no minimum contract you can leave and go elsewhere if the change is detrimental.

I have had po homefone since 2006, when I came over from bt with free caller ID it came over automatically and you def had to pay, you need to tell them to cancel it if you dont want it! it may have changed now of course how ever I doubt it.
