News to me. They told me only one debit card.

But then the Abbey are never that hot on consistency and admin anyway.

I'll keep quiet about it I think. I'm closing the account as soon as it's served its purpose.

As to Abbey consistency I agree - every visit a different interpretation.

I only gave the information about ATM/Debit cards because as soon as we registered a POA on my MIL's Abbey account her card was cancelled and we only found out when we had a distressed MIL on the phone saying she had no cash and her card didn't work. I would like to think that the compensation they offered after we claimed they had treated her differently as a disabled person by denying her a full range of banking facilities has had some effect and they have reveiwed and changed their policy re ATM cards.

As my brother and I have POA for many years for our father who has dementia, I can tell you that if you need a POA account Nationwide are the best by a million miles, they allow a cash card and Internet Access to the account.

Why is it I have less time now I am retired then when I worked?
  • Thanks, monkeyspanner, margaretclare, dzug1, and donny_gal, for sharing your experiences--it's all very useful info. Evidently the banks have different policies re LPAs, cheque books, etc but it's worrying to hear about the bad training and inconsistencies within individual banks.

To start with my partner will be trying to operate the LPA with the donor's current bank, whose name hasn't been mentioned in this thread yet. But we were very unimpressed when visiting to register the LPA by the lack of privacy offered, when one would have welcomed a bit of discretion or ideally an interview room. We were dealt with by the guy at the information desk within the main hall of the bank, who had a very loud voice that he was obviously proud of. No-one queueing for the cashiers could have failed to hear my partner's name, the donor's name, and the nature of our business there being broadcast by this idiot. (And the parties are known to a lot of people in this community.)

    Thanks again.

Yet another inconsistency alas - Nationwide told me they couldn't open a current account using a Power of Attorney - they could add a PoA to an existing account, yes, but not open a new one.
