Bank Holiday in Scotland

Scotland doesn't mark St Stephens [Boxing] Day as a 'bank holiday' but has January 2nd as a traditional public holiday instead.

How do banks work this arrangement as reagards opening or closing branches and how does 'clearance' work?

I would assume that Scottish bank branches will have to open on Tuesday 28th December [the English public holiday] therefore, but only for the morning possibly, and won't open at all on Tuesday 4th January.

But how about the clearance [or not] of payments through the banking system on those days which are designated a 'bank' holiday in one Realm but not in the other? I can also imagine that the de facto 'clearing day's correspond just to those used in one country - namely England - and that, in Scotland, payments into a bank on Tuesday 28th won't commence clearing until the following day - whereas, even though branches may not be open in Scotland on Tuesday 4th January, internet payments and other payments 'in progress' will continue to be processed as though that was still a banking day.

But does anyone know the true answer to this?
