Can't update AVG anti-virus - Help?

Hi I had AVG installed and because I kept getting messages saying the anti-virus was out of date, I installed the free 8.5 version. But it still says it's out of date. When I've tried to update it it keeps saying update failed and that access has been denied. Should I remove AVG and start again (with another?) or try and sort out the access? Any help would be so gratefully received.

Ditch it and use avira http://www.free-av.com/

Use removal tool http://www.avg.com/download-tools
