Alternator or battery?

Thanks all,again!
I did look at getting an alternator from GSF car parts, they do one for £78 plus vat,i paid £35 plus vat from the scrappy. I am trying to cut costs because the 106 is my second "work car" which i bought from Ebay exactly 1 year ago for £500,basically,i try and run it as cheaply as possible, that's why i try and save money in repairing it myself. My other car is a VW golf gt pd 130,and there is no expense spared with that one, although i have just found an independent VW specialist who will service it for me,rather than pay the local stealer top whack, believe me,if i got good service from them, then i wouldn't mind so much, but they are rubbish.
I will take the battery off,and give it a good charge.I did think about calling the RAC out,for them to diagnose the problem.Sponsored by Tesco Clubcard Points !!0 -
You have just had a demonstration of "Buy cheap, buy twice".

Do check your fusebox though. I had the light staying on after putting a new alternator in a 205 and it turned out that there was a fuse blown. There's also a possibility that you have a Bosch alternator with the detachable brush pack.0 -
And if the battery will still start the car easily a couple of days after being charged it's probably OK.0

I went down GSF car parts and ordered a new alternator, and as i knew would happen, the car would not start outside.
I called the RAC at 13.30,they turned up at 14.00,he jump started the battery, then checked to see if the battery was being charged from the alternator,it wasn't,so he jacked the car up,crawled underneath, and wiggled the main cable from the alternator, the engine note changed, meaning it was under load,so he stripped the old terminal off,and crimped an new one on,tested the system with his multimeter again, and everything was fine.
Now,was that the original problem, and i wasted £40 on an alternator i didn't need,or did i loosen the connection when i fitted the new one, that is the question! either way,it's sorted.
I did tip him £10,he was reluctant to take it (or so it looked),but it could have cost me another £100 if i had bought the new alternator, plus changing the part on a Peugeot 106 is a pain in the neck!
I did pop back into GSF car parts and cancel my order.
Anyway, thank's for all the replies.Sponsored by Tesco Clubcard Points !!0 -
It probably was the original problem but at least it's working now.0
