Magnaclean - how much should it cost?

We had a British Gas visit the other day as part of our annual contract check-up, and the engineer recommended we have a Magnaclean because of some problems we'd been having with the central heating system, banging and making awful noises when it first comes on. He said the Magnaclean would cost something like £340. Is that a reasonable cost or should I shop around? Has anyone else had one of thes fitted and what is your experience? I don't know whether we really need one or if it is just a sales ploy by BG. I don't really want to spend £340 at the moment if I don't need to.

the magnaclean itself is around £90, and i think a gas fitter would fit you one for less than £100.
have you thought about having the system powerflushed, to remove all the crap in the system?

or you could also put some sludge remover in the system, then drain down. then put some inhibitor in the system - along with a magnaclean.

i have a magnaclean on my combi system now, just had it fitted with a new boiler.

best bet is to get a local gas fitter around to quote you and advise you - bg are a total rip off.

(also have you tried bleeding the rads? - do downstairs 1st when heating is off and rads are cold, then do upstairs, trapped air???)

Good evening: £340:eek:...the OH powerflushes and fits a Boiler Buddy (another brand of magnetic filter made by Fernox) on a typical 7 rad system for slightly more than this here in the southeast. More quotes are in order.;)
