Tesco Car Insurance grrrrrrr

Im really annoyed with them and wondered if anyone knows who i can contact at customer compaints.

We have a car already insured with them and have our home insurance with them as well so on buying a car for my hubby to use for work at the weekend we naturally wanted to set up a policy with them for the new car.As we had to travel a fair distance to buy it we stayed at a travellodge overnight and used their wifi access to set up the new policy when we got back to the hotel with it.On logging on i noticed a great offer for a pressure washer for new policies taken out and thought great but didnt have my clubcard details to hand to input at the time. But needing to be insured continued with the policy.

have rung them today to enquire about it and got the snottiest woman on the phone who obviously failed charm school..she said we would lose some of the money weve paid as we paid the policy in full as she would have to cancel it and restart another policy..but am just miffed..we spend a lot of money with tescos with insurance and shopping etc and feel ripped off just because my clubcard wasnt to hand..

id be grateful for any details of who i could contact about this??

  • Although I am generally a huge fan of Tesco, as they generally are the cheapest at take-up, I should warn you that they have a very sharp practice when it comes to renewal time on car insurance. They send a renewal quotion letter stating an annual premium that is considerably in excess of that which you can see on their website if you enter your details.

If you call them up and point out this fact, they go all quiet for a bit (on hold) and then offer a quotation that is 50% of the way between the 2 figures. Example, the letter states a renewal figure of £500, the website states £400 for the same policy, so the Tesco operator offers £450 on the telephone.

I have recently taken to "quoting" a figure that is 10% LESS than the Tesco website figure when in conversation, just to see what happens.

Perhaps a representative of Tesco Car Insurance would like to comment upon this?

You cant blame Tescos for not having your clubcard to hand.

we cancelled a Tesco policy. OH bought a PT cruiser that should have come with alloys as standard (someone had replaced the alloys with steels, but the car originally rolled off the production line with alloy wheels). We sourced a pair of original alloys and called Tesco who wanted to charge an additional £70.

We ran 2 quotes through the site, one with alloys on the standard car, one without. Both were the same.

We repeatedly asked Tesco why the policy had been increased when if the wheels had been there when we took out the policy 4 weeks earlier it would have been the same price. They couldnt answer and wouldnt budge so we cancelled.

From the T+C's from Tescos website:

"Clubcard customers only. You must give your Clubcard number at the start of your quote to qualify."

No clubcard, No free washer. You have noone to blame but yourself.

In fairness I think this practice is common to all insurance companies - in fact I once started a new policy with a company that I was already insured with for this simple reason. When I phoned up to give them details of my no claims bonus I simply gave them my old policy number and when asked why I just hadn't renewed the policy I told the operator the day they charged a new customer the same as an existing customer would
be the day that I did jsut that.

OP - I can see why you are miffed but the t&c clearly state that you needed your clubcard details to take advantage of the offer. There are a number of ways you could have got around this - what about logging on to the clubcard site, you could have rung them. (btw where do you keep your clubcard - I've got one of those keyfob cards.....very useful!)

They give discounts to new customers - nothing unusual or specific to the insurance industry in that

Exactly Stu says. You often get an introductory discount for your first year. At renewal it goes back up to standard rate.

You could be cheeky and cancel the old policy and take out a new policy immediately like I do.

Most of the big four supermarket insurances are handled by UK Insurance Ltd who pay Tesco etc a commission and a fee to use the Tesco name.

When I used the word fairness I was using it in the context of the fact that this practice is not unique to Tesco.

Sorry, what's the complaint here? The snotty woman or the fact you couldn't get a perk you weren't entitled too?
