If it has been scrapped straight away by the guy then I wouldn't worry too much about it Yeah he might have made a quick buck but at least you got what you wanted - to be shut of the car asap and are £30 better off.

but we don't know it's been scrapped do we?

He might have done it up and sold it on if he had the know how.

If I'm honest, I suspect he will do it up and sell it on. It was in quite good condition and the top model (Ghia), only needed a new clutch. If I had the time I would've put it on eBay, but I didn't. Terryya is right - I wanted shut of it and I got £30 which I'm happy about. I just don't want to get into any trouble for not transferring ownership properly! On the DVLA website it states I can write to them with the new keeper's name and address, car reg and exact date of sale and they will keep this on file but can't update their records without consent from the new owner. So, I'll leave it a few weeks to see if I get anything through the post, then will do this.

    Thanks for all your replies.

Update: I've just had a call from the lovely breakdown assistance man, he reassured me the car is on his drive and will be off the road 'til the end of the month, when he'll change the clutch, tax it and transfer it to his name. I feel much better for speaking to him and really hope he proves that sometimes you can put your trust in people!

Others will tell you different, but there is really nothing to worry about here.

If there is any comeback to you, just direct them to this man. If he re-registers it you can expect a letter from the DVLA confirming you are no longer the keeper.

Grammargirl - you need to get that slip back and send it to the DVLA. You then need to ensure that they acknowledge receipt of that slip as well. As has been said previously, at the moment you are still the car's registered keeper - and are liable for it accordingly. You have a legal obligation to inform them of the change of ownership. If he's that lovely, he won't have any problem whatsoever returning the slip to you. The DVLA will cheerfully prsecute over this issue I am afraid, so you need to get it sorted.

Sorry, I am afraid you're offering very dodgy advice here.

    a) there IS something to worry about - see my post above.
    b) You can direct the DVLA to the breakdown man all you like - they will simply say "Sorry - we don't have the slip back - you're the registered keeper are are now liable for roadtax, plus fine, plus any costs that accrue."
    c) Yes, and if he takes a year to reregister it, the OP is liable for tax, fines etc as previously stated.

I wish it were as simple as you suggest, but it isn't.
