Linux Netbook question - looking for advice on formats for media files

Hi. I have a Linux Netbook that I want to take away on holiday, and I would like to load some children's films and/or TV shows onto the hard drive. I can play DVDs on a separate DVD drive plugged into the USB port, but don't want to have to lug around a separate drive and DVDs if possible.
I have a program on my Windows PC that converts media formats, but haven't been able to get a file to play on the Netbook. I am looking for advice on formats (ie how can I convert DVDs I have to store and play on the Netbook), and also some websites where I can buy or rent content. I can usually work things out when it comes to Windows, but am totally unfamiliar with Linux (Netbook was a present).

It's the Acer One (I think - can't check at the moment as I am at work).

Hi
I use Ubuntu Linux.
The two applications that I've used to rip DVDs are HandbrakeGTK and AcidRip.
These will make avi files or mp4 files.
Handbrake is probably the better known of the two.
These are the links to the websites for more information:-

With Ubuntu Linux the packages are either available in the Ubuntu repositories or they're available as Deb packages.
If you're using a different Linux there may be different ways to go about obtaining and installing them.

The Acer uses the Linpus linux distributionSquirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
