Phone 3G TV-out

I have a 3G iphone , and just purchased a cheapie 3rd party tv out lead . which works with YouTube , but doesn't with browser ( had idea of bbc iplayer / via iphone)
does anyone know if it can be done - does this function work with the more expensive Apple TV lead ( can't see its in the hardware though)
I have not unlocked the iphone ( prefer not to- even though its purchased outright PAYG - but using a simplicity sim)
