'Sell by' dates to be axed......apparently

I would worry a bit if they allowed shops to remove dates altogether. You could end buying something that's been on the shelf for weeks and has gone off but you wouldn't be able to smell it because of the tight packaging around it...
When something 'goes off' it generally produces gas, this gas would expand the packaging - think of 'blown' tins and jars - well it's the same for packaging. The appearance often changes too. Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.0 -
i use veg WELL past the bbe usually a month, e.g, onions.
i ate out of date salmon the other day... bought it on last day and forgot to freeze it, so sat in fridge for 4 days unopened, so put it in freezer.

I used to not buy in bulk because of best before dates. I see a bag of carrots with a date for a few days later and think "I'll buy seperate ones". But now I buy the big bag of Basics carrots and they last a month till after the best before date! - I always keep em in the fridge though.
I think its a good idea, as people live religiously by the these and chuck good food out.0
