Ideal Freezer Temperature?

What is the best temperature for a home freezer to be at?

I recently bought a second hand Hotpoint RZA50 and located it in a outside storage cupboard attached to the house. Good condition etc and freezes the food fine, but on the minimum setting it runs at about -32 degrees C which to me seems rather too cold. And if you turn up the setting, it gets even colder.

I run mine at -18C, which I think is what they recommend.

They should be -18C or below. -32 isn't bad, but you're wasting a huge amount of energy keeping it that low.

Most freezers/fridges are designed to operate in a warm house. If your outside cupboard is below e.g. 10C, then this could be the problem.

My understanding is that the standard setting would be -18c for a freezer, possibly going down to -24c if you have a quick chill function like on some of the Bosch fridges.

I'm currently looking into if and how we can higher the temperature on our Hotpoint freezer as I've felt it's ALWAYS been too cold since we've had it some five years or so. OK at least it's keeping things well frozen but it does mean the freezer needs defrosting more often than it should and everything is rock hard when taken out, which is not normally a major problem but is annoying when it comes to things like ice cream and so forth.
I've just checked the temperature and it's showing -26c on it's warmest setting when I know -18c is the ideal temperature to have. It also means it is working harder than it ought to and presumably using more electricity?

We hv approached Hotpoint c/s before but never got further than than receiving advice on what to do to reduce the ice problem.
I'm wondering if this is a common/known fault with this model and obviously hope there is something that can be done to fix it?

I would be interested to know if others have same problem with this freezer model? Meanwhile I'm going to do some googling.....:)
