Mitsubishi Colt - faulty glovebox

Hi guys,

Hope you can help me with this one!

In December 2008, I purchased a second-hand Mitsubishi Colt (2005 model) and the glovebox has recently developed a fault, whereby the catch sticks and the glovebox can therefore not be closed.

Upon Googling the issue, it would appear that this was a common problem and a new revised glovebox was made available free of charge to those requesting replacements under warranty.

I contacted Mitsubishi who advised that as the car is out of warranty, it will cost me £116.00 + VAT  for a replacement.

I'm just wondering if it would be worth pursuing Mitsubishi under the Sale of Goods Act for a free of charge replacement as the original glovebox was not fit for purpose (as shown by many buyer's guides online, forum posts and the revised one fitted to replace the original faulty ones).

Do any of you have any thoughts? I know I probably won't have much luck, but just can't justify spending that amount of money for a manufacturing defect! As the car is relatively new, I haven't been able to find any of the newer, revised gloveboxes on eBay or at a local breaker's yard.

Thanks for any thoughts/suggestions you can give.

Chris

The car is four years old and out of warranty. The last owner should have had it replaced for free but didn't. There seems to be very little point in you taking this any further with Mitsubishi. Who did you buy the car off?

    Hi,

The glovebox wasn't a recall item, so the previous owner wouldn't have had it replaced as the fault has only recently occurred.

I bought the car from a Ford dealership in Newbury.

I appreciate your point, but does the Sale of Goods Act not protect consumers for up to six years from the original purchase date?

    Thanks for your reply

you didnt buy it from mitsubishi or even a mitsubishi dealer new though did you?
you bought it from a ford dealer second hand so the sale of goods act contract you have is with them, not mitsubishi or any of thier dealers.

however, it is worth calling a mitsubishi dealer asking if they would replace it as it is apparently a known fault. other than this find one being broken in a scrap yard or on ebay and buy the part yourself, this happens in life things break
