Was The End of Last Year the bottom of the Market?

I remember huddling behind a wall in Ypres with my mate Tommy at the end of 1940 and asking him "do you think it will be over by Xmas?" He was a wise old cove. "Not a chance Mewbie" he said.
Wrong war, Mewbie. 'Over by Christmas' was WW1, which would make you about 113. Still, you wouldn't be the first one on here whose figures don't stack-up.
Of course you might have been alluding obliquely to our own dear Chancellor's predictions about the economy, which do indeed seem more likely than the prospect of someone who was at Ypres in 1914 recounting the tale on MSE.......but only just.;)

I've said it a million times, unemployment rising, GDP shrinking, public sector to be hammered after election, tax rises, interest rate rises in the medium term, if all these issues were opposite, the bottom would be here and now, they aren't and it isn't.
I've told you a million times, stop exagerating!"I can hear you whisperin', children, so I know you're down there. I can feel myself gettin' awful mad. I'm out of patience, children. I'm coming to find you now." - Harry Powell, Night of the Hunter, 1955.0 -

Darling was on the tv the other day on that crash thing, he said he thought the current recession was the worst in a hundred years or something, so if that's true, how on earth can it be over by the end of the year?Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -

After the war we got back together, attacking tramps in the local park but it wasn't the same. Drifted apart, started drinking, the rest writes itself. Lost all hope, became a hopeless shabby wreck of a man, twisted and bitter inside, a big time loser shunned by all. Didn't even get a telegram from her Maj on me 100th.
That's when I decided to become a BTL landlord.0 -
Tommy told me while we were out there. "Those young uns will never thank you Mewbie", he said. That was just before the big push into Allemagne. Afterwards I took Tommy's cufflinks back to his wife. He was still at the front, but it was a chance to see if she'd be up for it. She wasn't.

You really must have hit rock bottom mewbie! :rotfl:"I can hear you whisperin', children, so I know you're down there. I can feel myself gettin' awful mad. I'm out of patience, children. I'm coming to find you now." - Harry Powell, Night of the Hunter, 1955.0 -

Less of the end of the year, end of the month, please'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher0 -

Trying to change the subject again, not much longer and the beads of cold sweat will be appearing on your forehead.0 -

Now I'm on the scrapheap of life. Bit like your Beemer.
Oh - you wanted on topic? But I did that four posts ago. Will it be over by Xmas? Technically the recession will be. But house prices will still be falling like Adolf's doodlebugs, and unemployment rising like the Japanese sun over the Toyota forced labour bridge and train construction centre.0
