Virgin Media phone lines do not work with alternative carrier boxes - only BT lines, so you will NEVER be able to connect to the other telco, as all calls will be delivered by Virgin.

Why? Virgin (as a 'newcomer') is not required to open up its network to competitors, which is why the option to use a different carrier won't work.

Is there a distinction here between a Virgin Media cable line and a Virgin National ADSL line maybe?

It is the CABLE customers who cannot use the routing box. As VM can only provide service using BT lines in non-cabled areas, any routing code can be dialled for an alternative carrier.

So the OP appears to be on Virgin National?

I used to be on Virgin, and you COULD use another carrier without a problem.

How many phones do you have? Ie, do you have an extension without a first telecom box plugged in?
