Two faulty digital recorders - can I get my money back ?

I brought a digital video recorder last September which has broken twice now. Sharp replaced it the first time and are prepared to replace it again but I would rather have a refund and buy another machine that will work for longer than a few months. The retailer (beyond television) say that as I am past the first 7 days since recieving the recorder I am only entitled to have it repaired or replaced. Normally I would'nt mind this policy but what good is a digital recorder that may not let me watch the programmes that its recorded after a few months.

Can I insist on a full refund now as it is still under guarantee or are the shop and manufacturer right in only offering to replace it the recorder ?

I'd raise a bit of stink. If beyond television are only offering a replacement... perhaps you could push for a different brand through them?

There is no 7 day limit on refunds for faulty goods.
