Using Standard Colours on Web Site

Options
I have been provided with a corporate style guide for the charity I am producing a web site for. I have been using dreamweaver MX 2004 as I am a real novice, although learning fast and need to produce something pretty acceptable (although I am doing this voluntarily).

I am getting browser compatibility warnings on the HTML colour codes I have entered into dreamweaver that match the corporate colours.

If I can't use HTML colour codes due to non-compatibility with some browsers, how can I convert to a CSS equivalent?

In addition to the HTML colour codes, I also have the RGB, Pantone and CMYK codes.

Thanks

I think this is more an anachronistic throwback to the olden days ('02 or '03) when many people still had sixteen or 256 colour monitors. I doubt that web-safe colours are relevant theseadays.

    css colours are defined like {color: #c0c0c0} or {color: red} and {background-color: red}

Aaah.. the wonder of pantones... my job in printers has made me aware of these, and how amazing they actually are, however, within web design, you can't add a spot pantone colour in, you have to basically use the web hex equivalent.

i just googled, and this - http://www.easycalculation.com/rgb-coder.php will convert your rgb code into a hex code, so you can use that ok. Most monitors these days display millions of colours, so you really don't need to be "web safe" any longer, and as long as the website sticks to the w3c standards and css standards, there shouldn't be an issue at all..

    http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/ - css validator

if you're using MX2004 though, it'll be a struggle i think to be validated unless you know your html and css hand coding..

You only need to use the HTML codes in the style guide. RGB is for digital files (like logos etc.) and Pantone/CMYK are for printing processes only.

Nowadays you don't need to worry overly about the compatibility issues for the HMTL colours as most people's monitor will handle millions of colours. If you want to know which are 'web-safe'colours you can look at visibone.com/color as a reference.

Do make sure you validate your HTML as you go along though as Markymoo suggested.

'Safe' web colours have been irrelevant for around 10 years now. Ignore the warnings. They're only relevant for those people who use 256-colour displays, and I don't know of any sold in the last decade!

I have been using the HTML colours which are the Hex versions of the RGB codes:

    E05206
    A31A7E
    F0AB00
    etc

It is just the warnings that are appearing - otherwise I am not getting any, which must be a good sign!

    Thanks everyone who responded.
