British Gas one off Boiler repair

My boiler has broken down and I got a plumber out to look at it and he couldnt find anything wrong with it and suggested British gas fixed price repair.

I rang British gas last week and they said yes no problem but i would then go onto a homecare plan at £20 a month plus the one off fee of £96. I paid the £96 over the phone and they are due to come out in the morning.

My house is up for sale and has been for a while, ironically I got an offer which I acepted today. It is a cash buyer and wants to complete in 4 weeks.

My question is when they fix my boiler will I be able to cancel the homecare policy as in 4 weeks time I will not need it?

He did mention a colling off period but I remember him saying subject to cancellation fees? Can anyone help I am worried that this could be an expensive boielr to fix?

was the person who looked at it gas safe registered?
I find it difficult to believe a competant person could not find the problem. Why not tell us what the problem is?

Being Gas Safe does not make you competant. He may only be registered for installation and not for servicing and fault finding. He may have been trying to do a favour for a previous customer hoping it would be something simple. One of my last installations took british gas 4 seperate attempts to repair, that was almost 3 weeks without hot water and heating! He was gasSafe but was far from competant

The plumber who looked at it was recommended by a friend and turned out not to be corgi registered and said he could not say exactley what was wrong and didnt want to be changing things only to find out that was not the problem so he recommended british gas

Good afternoon: Gas Safe registration does not make not a distinction...if you hold CEN1 (Domestic Gas Fired Central Heating, Hot Water Boilers & Circulators up to 60kW) you are registered to install, service and repair a natural gas boiler. Are you GSR?

To the OP: The manufacturer's service engineer would be the specialist...and don't let anyone work on your boiler without seeing this

Ask to see CIPHE (Chartered Institute of Plumbing & Heating Engineering)

    Sorry, worded badly

    No but my partner is

That wasnt the point i was making, Some installers will only do installs and have not had the experience in repair work, some problems are easy to diagnose and repair while others could be one of a number of things,You cant really charge a customer for what you think it could be!

I don't think you can sign up to BG, have your boiler fixed a few days later and then cancel-at least not without paying some sort of cancellation fee. Why on earth didn't you just get a proper CH engineer (not a plumber) to come out and fix it? Since you haven't given us any idea what is wrong with it, it might have cost less than the £96 you have already paid. A decent engineeer will come out and give you a quote for £30-40, which is not charged if they then do the job.Why sign up for 12 months when you are moving?

Fully aware of that. The point I was trying to make somewhat badly was is the person who had looked at it both competent in fault diagnosis and gas safe registered.

I dont find it hard to beleive.

There are plenty of incompetent people on the gas safe register.

There is a difference between a simple mishap and blatant recklessness. The first can be excused, to err is human, the second cannot.

Many modern appliances are very complex and require specialist skills, training and equipment to fault find. Sometimes the fault just does not replicate when your their, spanner in hand.
