Am I write in thinking that a washing machine should last longer than 2 years I bought a Hotpoint washing machine 2 years ago and the barrings on the drum have gone I have been told its un repairable as its under 5 years of age can I ask for a replacement

Depends.... you would certainly expect a washing machine to lost longer than 2y, I'd say reasonable to assume at least 5y.
Intrigued too as to who has said it is not reparable, or do they mean beyond economic repair.
Contact your retailer in the first instance, and remind them of their obligations under SOGA that the item is expected to fulfull its intended function for a reasonable period of time. You could offer them the opportunity to inspect it, or advise them that you will get an independent engineer to submit a report, the cost of which you will claim from them. Depending on the manufacturer, you could try their customer services but they are not obliged to help.
They are obliged to repair, replace or (partial) refund. If they decline, seek an independent engineer's view as to the fault (inherent or wear/tear) and how long he would expect a machine to last, and a quotation for repair.
For 2y, I'd expect them to buckle quickly without going to court. If you paid on credit card, you could pursue them if you fail with the retailer under Consumer Credit Act Section 75.

Thanks for the info I purchased the machine from currys I went into the store yesterday and they said for me to contact Hotpoint which I did and THEY DIDNT WANT TO KNOW ! so I will try curry's again0

You will have to go through the Customer Service centre, the stores have no way of booking repairs outside the warranty period.
