New UPVC Conservatory and cost? (merged threads)

I am soon to apply for “Planning Permission” for a new PVC conservatory attached to our sitting room (1930 large size semi). Specially treated glass will be used throughout and small opening windows will be designed in the roof.

The area to be covered is North facing and the conservatory will fit between the existing outside wall of the kitchen as one of the sides and a new wall between our next door neighbours and us on the other side (to be opposite said kitchen wall making it two solid walls either sides of the sitting room). This new wall will have recommended Council dimensions (2.50metres extended and 2.50 height), replacing part of a 6” fence between both properties. The conservatory area will be finished by two small dwarf walls on either sides leading to a double door right in the middle.

Questions:

- Which is best to heat this area of 6.5m2 (expected volume 17m3) for year round usage: Electric heaters/convectors, under floor heating or radiator by extending the sitting room wet system into the conservatory?
- Which is best for floor covering: Laminate, Lino or tiles?

Any other recommendations greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

  • gas central heating is the cheapest but i think that there are rules to prohibit it that some people would just ignore. floor heating would be nice on the feet!
tile floors are the hardest wearing but cold.
    Cash ISA rate 6.5% fixed for 2 years. Mortgage rate 0.75% = 5.75% profit on £75K = £4500 per year:j
Mortgages make money. Definitely don't wanabee mortgage free!
  • we had a new conservertory built last year and after much searching around websites ect decided on putting the exsisiting living room radiator {our conservatory goes of from front room and our house is also 1930s) in.The conservatory is warm in winter with this when the heater is on but can soon get very cold if heater is off, so we bought one of those halogen heaters for a boost when needed. if we were in there at night and the heating was off only cost 2 or 3pence an hour run but you may only need this for a boost now and again.our radiator has been fine on its own. as for flooring we chose tiles they look and keep great and certanly look more traditional than lino or laminate if your conservatory is to be built on a north facing side keep your walls and flooring a vry light colour you will be suprised at how much light your new conservatory will bring in and if you put in full patio doors between the conservatory and room the light reflects more natuaral light into your frontroom. 1 other tip if you are putting patio doors inbetween room and conservatory think about size and space we got made two normal size doors but had full glass panels down each side of doors this enabled us to have plenty of light in but the doors were taken up less space than large patio doors when opened also we had them open into the room rather than conservatory as obviosley there is more room in your lounge than in the conservatory

Many thanks for sharing your thoughts.
  • Just get a plumber to put in a couple of decent size radiators because that’s what my dad did when he built his conservatory.
Or under floor heating or electric oil filed heaters or electric heaters, I would just put in two radiators if your house as central heating because your heating the house anyway.
Also my friend had a conservatory built at the back of his house and didn’t need planning permission as long as it had a see through roof.
My dad was the same, just ring them up before your pay any money as most people waste money instead of phoning them first.

I had a new conservatory added to the back of the house a few years ago and I am very pleased with it. It's only 3m x 3m so doesnt take much heating. (we use one of the small 2kw electric fan heaters).
Extending the radiators as recommended above seems a good idea.
We decided to have it tiled but had problems with the tiler and in the end I did it myself. I was very pleased with the job and saved myself £200. If it felt cold we could put down mats but so far we have not felt the need.
Because it is not very large we have 4 Ikea Poang chairs and that works really well.

(My mother in law found them so comfortable that she had one for her lounge).
    Good Luck

It's not really a very good idea to have a north-facing conservatory. Have you considered getting a proper extension instead? Special glass or not, a conservatory has very poor insulation and if you don't get the benefit of heating from the sun then you don't benefit from all that glass.
Time is an illusion - lunch time doubly so.

A good floor covering is Flotex, it's easy to clean and it feels warm to your feet.

A previous thread of mine was asking for ideas re. heating and floor covering of a "soon to come" North facing conservatory (4m x 4m).

I will be getting quotes for PVCu and glass windows but in the meantime, any body here has any idea how much we are talking about on the financial side?
