Best and cheapest way to clean windows

Options
I have recently bought new windows which I can see out of (the old ones had poor seals and were full of condensation) and I am very proud of them. I am happy to clean them myself, but cannot decide the best way to reach the upper floor outside windows. I have read poor reviews of telescopic cleaners/mops/squeegies and cannot really afford to fork out for a long ladder.
I am really looking for any alternatives (rather than paying for someone else to do it) or a recommendation for a telescopic cleaner.
Here's hoping!

  • The cheapest and most effective way of cleaning your window is with cornflour and hot water. Put it into a spray bottle and watch the smears disappear. Your only need enough cornflour to make the water look cloudy. It is brilliant.

You can buy double sided magnets. http://www.pitchwell.com/Shop/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=81 You often see them advertised on the shopping channels. You need to remember to have them joined by string incase you drop one. There are different ones for double and single glazing. The double glazing ones have stronger magnets.

Just curious, but didn't you take this into consideration when choosing your new windows? Fire escape windows are usually pretty easy to get access to clean.

I can't get on with these gadgets - darn good job they are connected together otherwise I'd have lost them ages ago! Come to think of it, that wouldn't have been a bad thing as they are so perishing useless!!!

We have similar trouble with our upper windows which are above a conservatory. DH puts the pressure hose on them and then uses a telescopic brush. Sometimes he stands on a smallish step adder so he doesn't have to extend the pole quite so much and the 'waggle' factor is less of a problem.
