BT Cancellation Charge

Hi Y'all,

I rang up BT yesterday to cancel my Phone Line and Option 3 Broadband for a hosue that I no longer live in and everything was going ok, they said yes they would cancel it but it would take 14 days or something. That was all fine, but then the operator informed me that there would be an £18 charge to cancel and I was a bit taken back at first as I'm out of contract, it's definitely been over 18 months that I've had it (Probably about 21 months) so I asked him what the charge was for and he told me it's because the cancellation required an engineer.
Is this right? Do they always do this? I would have thought that since I'm out of contract it shouldn't cost anything to cancel regardless of whether an engineer is required. And furthermore, why is an engineer required? Surely all they have to do is cut the service off. We didn't even need to have an engineer come round when we ordered the phone and broadband as the line was already activated.

Any help would be appreciated, and if I'm on the wrong section of the forum please let me know and I'll shift it.

Thanks

Chris

Yes, there is a charge. It is normally paid by the provider you transfer the broadband to (where it isn't an engineer's trip to stop but to change) and often is subsumed in the new package you buy. But as you are not transferring to anyone the cost falls to you.
