Q.about Car Insurance

Hello

I can't believe that after 15 years of driving im still unsure about insurance. I have had my current car for 4yrs and my renewal came in very high? I have 5 yrs no claims with Tesco So I can prove that to a new insurerer, but I cant remember who my previous insurance was with ,I have never had a claim or conviction since i started driving.

Q. should i have legal cover ?

Q. should I increase the excess to bring the premium down?

I Intend to pay a one off installment, Tesco came in at 417 and when I went through retains the best they could do was 388 with £30 gift card.

Swinton came out best with 300, surely for someone with no claims a basic ford focus which is 5 yrs and only drives approx 4000 miles a year have a lower premium?

    Q. should i have legal cover ?

    Very difficult to answer.
Personally I prefer to have it.
    Q. should I increase the excess to bring the premium down?

Only if you can afford it and have added in both compulsory and voluntary (and any other) excesses. Some people don't realise they are cummulative and you need to add them up together.

Have you tried the comparison sites, quidco, Martins article?
If that's the best you can get , then that's the price I'm afraid.

Location and occupation are major rating factors and these might explain the highish premium.

Also be aware that lower mileage might make you higher risk and not lower.
Sometimes the insurers logic can seem odd, but they do have claims experience to back it up.
A pensioner doing 2000 miles a year might be more dangerous than a commuter doing 10,000 miles.

Do you have a partner you can add as a named driver? even if they don't use the car?
    This can lower the premium.

There a numerous tips in Martins article so it's worth reading through/
