What is a Rodding Access?

I recently had a downstairs extension done recently had it inspected by the council and have been told ' the rodding access to the ground floor W.C should be located, inspected and approved. What is it and where would I find it?

Should be a small round/oval cover over a pipe on the ground. I have two at the side of my house. I think its basically an overflow type pipe and gives plumbers access with rods if there is a blockage. Check at the side of your house where your pipes are on the wall which come from your bathroom. I think I have one for toilet waste and one for water from the sink/washing machine but I'm sure other MSErs will know better.

If you don't have one then you'll have to have one installed by digging up the drains. Your builder would know he had to fit one though.

Rodding access can take a number of forms, not just a rodding point as mentioned above. It is any point and which you can insert drain rods/ high pressure hoses to clear up and down the line. If you have an inspection chamber this counts as a rodding access too. To locate it basically follow the line that your builder put in the foul drainage pipe, any point that you can access the pipe from would.

Im a bit confused though, did building control come out and look at the drainage and then make the comments? If so it sounds like you builder may not have put an access in.

Yes they have been out. I have had a look around the house could not find one you could be right the builders might not have put one in. Great

Good job I have not paid them in full yet just hope it does not create too many problems as all the fixture and fittings have gone in.

it can be as simple as a soil pipe access bend.
