Broken Bin - HELP PLEASE!!

Hi - I bought a bin from Wilko 5 years ago. It was a Curver plastic swing top bin. From what I remember I paid £4 for it which was a lot to me.

However now, 5 years down the line the "swinger" top seems to have broken.

I have lost the reciept but am aghast that plastic has perished after such a short amount of time.

Do I have any legal recourse for Wilko and Curver selling a product - "unfit for purpose"?

Has anyone on this board had a product that they have had years of faithful service out of and then it has given up the ghost and they expect recourse?

I am disappointed in Wilko and Curver for not being decent about a product still in stock that has worked for 5 years. Disgraceful!

Any Help or advice? Thanks

    Hi,

the brackets that hold the swing top in place can usually be sourced from any major DIY shed or failing that, your local hardware store.

If you have troubel finding them, you can probably manufacture some by purchasing some lengths of plastic piping, screws, a hacksaw, a black and decker workmate and some strong industrial glue.

In addition I would reccommend a product called 'plas revive' which can be found in either brush on or aerosol versions. If brushing, I would reccommend 'harris' brushes for the best finish. Dont forget to buy a paint kettle, thinners, overalls, a dust sheet and face mask. This should have the plastic looking like new.

Total cost should only come to about £165ish and to my mind is well worth the outlay as the finished article will look like new.

Let us know how you get on...

Has the bin been exposed to sunlight regularly over it's 5 year life? If so, and the plastic is not UV stabilised, it will degrade with the result that the plastic becomes fragile and brittle.

  • Very funny Olias.

I assume that the original post is tongue in cheek?......if not then the poster has a very unreal idea of value for money.

I think £4 for a bin is good value in itself, but then to last 5 yrs..wow.

    What rubbish!

I think for 4 quid your bin has lasted well, these type of bins never last long. I had a curver bin before the one I have and the lid was the first thing to break. I kept the actual bin, handy for storing things in my garage.

I bought a simplehuman stainless steel bin for half price in an Argos sale over a year ago. The soft closing mechanism broke after about a year so I emailed simplehuman and they sent me a new lid free. Simplehuman have a five year guarantee with their bins.

If I was in your position I'd just buy a new bin for 4 quid or upgrade to a Simplehuman or Brabantia bin but they do cost 50 quid and upwards, I was lucky I got mine on offer. Sometimes Amazon have offers on them.

So, if it cost £4 and has lasted 5years(60months). Even if you scrapped it now it would have only cost you about 6 pence a month.
I can see why you are "aghast" and shocked at the expense! Not fit for use!, you are having a laugh, I hope. If you are not, then get a life or another bin. This forum is becoming a joke.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
