Nationwide - in branch ATM stole my deposit

I deposited £490 in cash, the machine counted the cash and confirmed that it had received £490. It then froze, rebooted, spat out my card after 6 minutes and thats it; no receipt and no acknowlegement. I am now aware that the machine proceeded with my transaction without asking for a PIN number so how would it have identified my account.
Branch staff coul dnot care less and have in no way assured me that there woul be no problem. An investigation is to be carried out tomorrow and a call will be forthcoming.
I am not confident that a speedy resolution is on the cards.

Ouch! Thats a nightmare situation to be in - please keep us updated. Usually though, as you've queries it the branch staff will look for it and when they find the exact amount you quoted they will know it is you and pay it to your account. They are usually quite proficient in this area.... usually being the operative word

Should be fairly easily resolved, I'd have thought.
Have you checked your account to see if the money was credited to your account? It's possible that it credited it, but just didn't give you a receipt.
There's no need for a PIN when you're paying money in, as Nationwide couldn't care less who pays money into an account. PINs are only needed for withdrawals, as you could lend me your card, and I could pay money into your account no problems.
If the money wasn't credited to your account, then the machine will clearly not balance by £490. There will also almost certainly be an audit log of everything that happens on the machine, so if you tell them the time it happened, they will be able to see that the machine did indeed have a problem at that time, which backs up your story.
If the money is not showing in your account, go back to the branch and speak to them. It should be fairly easy for them to resolve, but if they won't do it quickly, then just make a complaint.0
