Here's some moneysaving advice - don't go to Cancun no matter how cheap. You couldn't pay me to go back.

OK don't go to Cancun, but fly to Cancun airport and take a short taxi and boat ride to Isla Mujeres and have the holiday of your life!

Cancun was utterly destroyed by Hurricane Wilma last October and I mean totally trashed. It'll be a half built building site at best. Modern resort hotels were reduced to rubble and the beaches were washed right across the island and into the lagoon on the other side. I know this because I spent a week living like a refugee sleeping on a concrete floor and looting to get food.

You pays yer money and takes yer chance.

There are loads of amazing places nearby that will be amazing. I have never wanted to go to Cancun. It's an amazingly beautiful place spoiled by too much tourism (particularly Americans). It's like what we've done to certain parts of Spain. But I travelled through a lot of Southern Mexico and Central America and it's amazing down there. If you're prepared to sit on a bus for a day to get somewhere then this is an amazing deal.

The entire area was decimated. I'd check before you book.

WE also were in Hurricane Wilma. cancun was totally trashed but Playa Del Carmen was not so bad, things were virtually back to normal within days.
Playa Del Carmen is beautiful, I would recommend that anyone going should stay here.

Although it looks like all the cheap flights have gone.

Just checked - Tuesday 18 April depaerture still available albeit £10 more at £184 including tax.

    Hope this is useful

So would you say it was amazing then?

Isla Mujeres is indeed cool (or even amazing) - but if its true that cancun got trashed then i would expect that IM did too as its right nearby. Shame as there was a cool little hostel there that i really liked.
Playa del carmen is very nice and a bit less touristy... few hours bus ride away if i remember correctly.
    stay lucky!

Wish I had some free cash and could travel around those dates because sea fishing in Cancun is one of my dreams, supposed to be arguably the best in the world.

I'll go along with the don't go to Cancun brigade! I wouldn't go back even if the hurricane hadn't hit.

How anyone can call a strip of land with wall to wall hotels "amazingly beautiful" is beyond me.
