I want to back up some files I have on my PC and a friend said I can save them as an image?
Can anyone explain what this is and how I can do it?

Basically it involves taking a 'snapshot' of an entire partition and its contents so that in the event something horrible happens you can restore the system to the state it was in when the image was taken. Here's a guide I found a short while ago.
It's not much use for backing up individual files, but very handy if the company that built your PC neglected to provide installation media.

It's not an image as in a picture, it means to take your information and make it one file, then that file can be expanded later on. e.g. ISO image.
If you dont want to back up your os then you might want to just copy the files to a USB stick.0
