Joint account Post office

My friend and I tried to open a joint savings account at the PO, to deposit weekly small cash to save up for a favourite charity.
We filled in the forms, they did a credit check and only I got a letter 2 weeks ago, that they wanted proof of address, which I gave them (bank statement and passport).
For my friend all was fine.
We had to make an initial deposit of £500 to open the account which was paid in cash at the PO
I received today a letter that our application has been rejected because my friend did not respond to her letter asking for proof of address. My friend never got this letter. I rang them up and they insisted 2 letters have been posted to her, but she never did receive this. The PO enclosed a cheque for £500 in both our names, that can only be lodged in a ........joint account which we do not have!!!
I don't want to open an account with them anymore, but how can we see our money back, as we do not have a joint account?
The PO told us to apply again, make sure that we give all the necessary documents, pay the deposit with the cheque they returned. And what happens if we get rejected again???
No toiletries spend in 2011.
So far spends....£0!

What a mess! And why did you use the Post Office. I'm sure you could have made a better arrangement with an on line bank. I don't think I would bother with them again but would just open an ordinary bank account in both yr names as a one off, withdraw the money and start again. That should be easy enough and very often, these days, banks don't always want paper proof of address, identity etc especially if you have been in your houses for some time but, in any case most people have bank statements, bills, tax forms etc they can send.

I seem to remember that money for charity or for a social club etc cannot be invested in a higher rate account so wherever you put it you'll not get much interest but someone else might know more about this than me. By the way, you need to make your print size bigger as it is very small for reading. Good luck.

All banks need to check your identity before opening an account to comply with the money laudering regulations, although the exact requirements vary with the individual provider.
If you open an online account then as Jake'sGran said a lot of them will verify your identity electronically.

Select another account and check their identity requirements first before having another go.
