Replacement UPVC double glazing

We need to replace our windows and want UPVC double glazing but we are unsure what will be the cheapest way to get it. We have seen advertised half price Safestyle UK etc but is their cost 50% higher than everyone elses anyway. Any advice on how we could get the cheap UPVC double glazing would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

  • I need to replace 2 windows soon, I was thinking of ordering them from screfix.com and get a builder to install them for us.

Heard many worrying stories about safestyle uk when looking for windows last year. I got many quotes which varied wildly as did quality of merchandise, shop around alot. I got 12 quotes and ended up using a local firm whose product looked better than anyones with superior locks etc and was the cheapest quote!!! Its a minefield so tread carefully. good luck.

we used safestyle last year (they were also the cheapest) and cannot find one thing bad to say about them.

    the workmen were great.
it was completed in one day.
    no damage to wallpaper etc.
they cleaned everything up after themselves.
had a complimenary call from safestyle to check everthing was ok and a reminder of the cs number should we need to get in touch.

I saw bad remarks about them here and htere but I think all DG firms are the same when it comes down to it and just want your money.

We had a good experience with safestyle.

I have replaced my windows using a local company who uses a 'trade' manufacturer who supplies high spec windows which are updated regularly to be as effecient and good to look at as possible - also incorporating features that mean the installer can fit them without much hassle.
This company has no premises, no workshop, no salesmen, and 2 vans - and they do not put lavish adverts in the local papers [they don't need to they are so busy, from recommendation!].
Therefore I haven't pulled out money to support a fancy showroom, fancy vans, a workshop needing very expensive machinery to make the windows, and the salary of a salesman, nor big regular newspaper ads....I have paid just a good price for good quality windows put in by experienced hardworking men who give all the information about the windows without pressure. They are members of FENSA and have been just downright pleasant and have given a good service. It was an excellent job.

As one of them live next door but one from my son he knows I would be on the doorstop if anything went wrong! So personally I would cut out all the 'middlemen' and the frills, and deal a company who has low overheads, is friendly, local and has a good reputation.
  • I also shopped around and got several quotes, safestyle being the dearest by about 4 grand  i told the saleman i didnt have £8,000 to spend on windows and i still needed more quotes b4 i made my decision, the then nocked it down to £6,500 i still once again said no i need 2 shop around, then suddenly he said i could buy the windows using his very own personal discount if i was to sign on the dotted line there n then for a price of £4, 500, so as u can see the difference is price is amazing, and i couldnt help but get the feeling he was taking the preverbial....
I ended up going for a local firm just like quatro, who was also fensa approved, and my windows were fitted very professionally, by 2 friendly fellas who didnt pressurise me at all, infact once the gave me the quote they waited for me 2 contact them, as they didnt want me 2 feel like i was being hounded, windows have been in about 2 months now and the quality and style is fantastic

oh by the way, the £8,000 safestyle quoted me was actually getting the back for free !!!! hmmmm
    £2 coin savers club = £118
    20p saver club = £275.80 :T yippeeeee

I did all my windows and doors last year and went to local companies that were recommended to me. Get a few quotes and run then against each other. Do NOT go for the muppets that you see advsertised on the tv or national newspapers offereing BOG OF deals or free fitting etc. There is a reason they offering these deals and prices and I would run a mile.

Local & recommended is the best and only way to go.

so how do you find a local recomended firm if u don't know anyone in your area who has had double glazing? anyone know of one in west yorkshire?

we had a quote from safestyle a couple of years ago & then had an unexpected problem which meant we couldn't afford windows from anywhere - we had told safestyle they were too expensive anyway. we were hounded with phone calls even after telling them not to phone & joining telephone preference service. we were sworn at & threatened just cos we said we didn't want anything more to do with them! avoid!!!

  • Try this online window quoter as a rough guide to what you should be paying:
    http://windowquoter.priceengine.co.uk/

We've just bought windows for our entire house from Broxwood (they are double glazed, argo filled - like you get in Europe, much better standard that most English double glazing, with wooden tilt and turn frames, they come factory prepainted, etc), and came out only £2,000 more than the local Magnet trade counter! http://www.broxwood.com/index.htm

If you want the very cheapest option though - then try Magnet trade (and get a builder to fit them for you). It was far far cheaper (and nicer windows) than all the double glazing quotes we got. Just go to your nearest store http://www.magnet.co.uk/storelocator/ and go up to the trade counter (they usually offer about 30% off the brochure prices)

You just have to factor in the cost of getting an Approval Certificate from your local council if the builder is not FENSA registered.

Otherwise you will have problems at house sale time.

it cost £120.00 for windows up to £5000 from building regs hardly the earth. so if you get trade and a builder and say the windows cost you even £10000 you pay BREGS £240, bargain id say
