3 networks services and my rights?

Hi All,
I'm wondering if anyone knows if this is acceptable practice. In Feb 09 I upgraded my mobile with 3 and signed an 18month contract. Since then I am lucky if I can maintain 1 call in 10 due to the v poor signal on the 3 network at my home address (N London). The majority of people I know refuse to call my mobile, as do work contacts. When I approached 3 about this issue (many times) they have variously insisted the system is good all the way down to there being a marginal signal, but they are aware of the issue and I should just wait?
When I took out the new phone and contract everybody assured me it would work better than the previous phone.
I assured them that I would return it if it didn't, only to find out that 3 don't accept your returning the phone if you have used it in any way? They actually told me that to decide if I was happy with it I should have just looked at it and not switched it on as that is apparently personalising the phone!
Currently their advice is that I should connect to a roaming network if I want to make a call, but to receive one I would obviously have to be psychic to know when somebody may call me. In fact I'd have to be incredibly psychic as the phones are all pre programmed to switch back to the 3 network after 5 minutes of inactivity even though it doesn't work!
Any relevant advice would be great.

Well since you can leave in 2 months I suggest you cut your losses, pay it off and join another network.0
