Glass Balustrade??

Hi All, .
I fell in love with the idea of a glass balustrade going into my new house but after contacting several companies, I've not managed to get the price under £1500.00 for supply only. Then a friend asked why I don't just get a DIY one, which i didn't think was possible. He reckons I can just buy some safety glass from a glaziers, get some clamps and then just fix it to my my two end posts that are already on the landing.
Has anyone down this before? Does anyone know of any regs that i need to know? Below is a picture of what i would like it to end up like.
Any help would be great.

I've been looking for something like this for a while.
I understand that below a certain height (800mm?) you have to use safety glass.
Sources of glass would be: glaziers; shower doors; glass table tops.
Would any toughened glass be ok, so long as it was 6mm or 10mm?
You'd also need to find the clamps.
Hopefully an expert will know!0 -
hi guys,
id also love to do this in my flat. we have our lounge in the basement (its a split level flat!) our kitchen on the next floor up, and our bedroom on the top floor (i know very strange layout!). all floors are connected by stairs with wooden balustrades at the mo, and it would look amazing in glass. im going to be looking into designing it all soon so i will get back to you if i find anything interesting!
dont know where to start tho! does anyone have any suggestions for piece parts? I.e. brackets, handrails, glass feet etc? i can source the glass easy enough from any glazing company (8m toughened glass) but dont know where to start!

Try a company called Preedy glass in London.
They have an offshoot company called prefit fittings (follow the links of the main site below).
They are commercial glazing suppliers and can pretty much run up anything to spec for sensibe money.
I've had some pretty nice minimalist shower enclosures and back lit bath panels run up by them over the years.
