Pursuing ex-tenant for rent arrears

I co-own a house with my ex-partner. In April our tenant was finally evicted by the courts having not paid rent for 10 months (4500 pounds). The court ordered her to vacate the property and pay us the outstanding balance by the end of the month, but unsurprisingly she did a moonlight flit, didn't pay us the money and left no forwarding address.

So now what do we do? Money's extremely tight for me (I've been unemployed for nearly a year) and I'm very reluctant to just write off 4500 pounds, but advice seems to be that we should just let this go - the lawyer who took care of our eviction proceedings told us that we should be careful about "throwing good money after bad". I've looked into selling the debt on to private debt collection firms, but the one that I've heard back from told me that they only deal with commercial lettings, not domestic ones.

Do we have any chance of seeing this money again?

    You say you have no forwarding address .... if you have no idea where the tenant is living, you have precious little chance of finding them. Even if you find them, you will not be able to physically extract £4.5K from them. The best you can do is to get a bailiff to sieze a load of tat, to be sold - hopefully, for £4.5k. Is it likely that your ex-tenant had goods worth this amount?

    Have to say that you are almost certainly going to be better off writing this off to experience and focussing on getting better vetted tenants - and being firmer in collecting arrears - in the future. Sorry
