You'll need too..
Open the bonnet
Locate the plastic panel across the slam panel, next to the headlamp you will have a small plastic clip with a flat screwdriver head on it, locate these
Undo these, till the head pops out, if not pull them up gently
Lift the black panel up, put something in there (like a rag) to gain access to the catch 2 bolts.
Note position of the bonnet catch as the 2 bolts are in slot holes
Remove the 2x 10mm bolts, catch will drop away on the inside
Pull the catch out
Use some carb / brake cleaner to degrease the catch, use a toothbrush and spray it clean. Dry with a rag, grease this up and operate the catch.
Refit the catch, and insert 2x 10mm bolts.
Align lock to point noticed before, tighten bolts, remove rag, and secure slam panel cover, pushing clips down.
Close bonnet, but hold 5-6 inches away and let it slam. Dont press down, let it slam shut, hence the slam panel.

I'll give it a try, thanks very much! I can't normally slam it down even though it's working though because of the other catch - it's got the release catch inside the passenger door (-which is connected to the faulty part where it's not un-releasing the machanism just under the front of the bonnet) and there's the second catch just to the right of the Renault badge under the bonnet that you pull forward to release - this second catch means it doesn't slam down... should it?!0
