Hi,
I suffer from ulcerative collitus and was wondering if i should claim DLA, i dont need help around the house or cooking, but its leaving the house that i have a problem with.
I have to be near a toilet and that means that my OH has to drive me everywhere, i cant go on the bus or the train this then costs us alot more money. what do you think.
thanks

I't always worth trying, you may be able to get the mobility part of DLA. A good site to use is http://www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/ it costs about £20 a year, well worth the money. The 1st time I claimed DLA I did it myself, for my renewal I used the above site. The other alternative is to get CAB to help you out with the form filling.
It can be quite daunting filling in the form as it makes you really look at your illness/disability. I wish you all the best if you decide to claim

i work for the DWP and all i would say, is as an alternative to spending money to get someone to help fill in the form, complete the form yourself (if you thik you might have a claim) and really word the form how your illness affects you on THE WORST DAY you've h0

My ex mother in law completed her form was refused, i completed it for her and she got the highest rate on both parts.
give it a shot. if they refuse you, and you feel its unfair, appeal the decision.0 -
thank you i do have friend that can help me fill in the form, i was just unsure if they give dla to people that suffer with things like this, as i dont have a problem looking after myself just have to be driven everywhere.
I also wondered if i should apply for a blue badge to be able to get close to buildings when i have to run in.

Sprinkly, I have interstitial Cystitis and have sever bladder problems (PBS), I constantly have to be near or know where the nearest toilet is, I can also be in quite a bit of pain with this (abdomen, Back and legs) I only recently got a blue badge, something I had never thought of before, it was only when I was speaking to my Doctor about getting a parking ticket because I had to park on double yellow lines one day to go and find a toilet. I also can not travel on public transport. She suggested I try to get a discretionary one which is only temporary until my condition hopefully improves. I sent the form away and received the badge a week later.
It has been an absolute god send, I now no longer panic if I am out and about and it helps when I go shopping myself as I can now get nearer if I need to if my legs/ back etc are sore. I have had some looks and tuts off people and shaking their heads when they see me come out of my car, I think a lot of people still perceive the blue badge as a Wheelchair thing or elderly person
I have been off work sick since August last year and was only receiving basic ssp, which ran out in Feb.
I have never claimed anything in benefits for this because 1: I don't know if this is something I would get help with and 2: its quite embarrassing asking for a benefit "because I pee a lot" I was unable to work mainly because of the pain but also because I was so tired, I'm up at night every hour, sometime more.
I have just had my second daughter and will now qualify for some Maternity pay, but after 6 weeks this will go back to basic SMP, which to be honest I am struggling financially at the moment I can only see it getting worse.
Speak to your doctor , they need to fill out the form anyway so wouldn't hurt to try

Hmmm worst possible day is NOT how the DWP tell you to fill in the forms, it fact this can harm your claim and surely it's fraud!!0 -

When looking at your claim, the DWP will have access to information that gives an idea of how an illness would affect a person.
If a claim appears to be exaggerated, and one sided, that that will instantly set alarm bells ringing, and the claim be subject to further scrutiny.
If you have 1 good day our of 7 say so.
Have a look at this information by a respected DWP DLA Decision Maker

I would honestly say do not fill out the form just detailing your worst day. You need to fill it out describing your condition including how it is on both good days and bad days. Advice to the contrary is wrong imo and could end up invalidating your claim. There is something delicious about writing the first words of a story. Thank you very much for your help, you are all so kind.
It is hard trying to explain this on forms and it can be embarassing when trying to go shopping and i just have to drop the basket and run to the loo, with not much warning.
I also wont go to the hairdresses just incase and that is how i have now ended up not doing this just incase.
Thank you, I will apply and see what happens, do i just ring the same people for a blue badge application as i did for the DLA.0 -
