If the only way a company will deal with you is through CPA then my advice is to walk away and find an insurer that does direct debit.
This is almost all of them so there is something seriously fishy with a company that insists you use CPA.

Thanks for the advice. My problem was I did not even know that I was signing for a CPA and I have been doing this for the last five years with them (Norwich Union - now Aviva). In fact when I was paying there was some small print
For your convenience and to ensure that there is no interruption of cover, we will securely store your payment details so that we may automatically renew your policy for subsequent years (Direct Debits, or payments made by Visa, Delta or Mastercard only). 28 days before the expiry of your existing policy, we will issue you with a renewal invitation and at the expiry of the 28 day period we will automatically renew your policy using your payment details. If you do not wish to accept the renewal invitation simply contact us.

I though I just needed to call them to cancel it. Now when I call they say wait for 11 months. And if I read the small print again it does says "If you do nort wish to accept renewal invitation simply contact us". Which means I first need to wait for the renewal invitation which is 11 month down the line.

I had no idea that I was signing to CPA. I will take your advice though and be more careful in future.

For this, I contacted Aviva the first time and being asked to wait for 11 months. I contacted again today and the lady said it has been cancelled. I have then send them an email and asked them to confirm that it has been cancelled. I just hope they respond back positively.

Otherwise folks, do I have a case of telling them that they did not make it clearly enough for me to understand that I was signing for a CPA.

I've had the same with automatic renewal with car insurance policies, but I think you're getting yourself worried over nothing. In 11 months time you will get a renewal invitation, which will include instructions on how to contact them if you don't want to renew. When the invitation arrives, simply ring the phone number provided and tell them you don't want to renew. In the meantime, don't worry about it and get on with enjoying the beautiful weather! ;)

I am only worried because I always used to ignore the renewal quotations and just go online and buy the best deal. This time around I need to remember to cancel the current policy, and it means changing the way you have been doing things so far. I am also !!!!ed off with these marketing tricks.

What's the big deal with waiting 11 months.
Most policies these days are on auto renewal (house and car).
You also need to remeber to do you car tax, service, MOT.
So why not jsut put it all into a spreadsheet or diary.

I have a spreadsheet where I put all of the above with subscriptions and anythign else annual.

I suspect the 11 months thing is for their convenience and if you wrote them a letter then they'd have to cancel it, however I wouldn't advise you chance it.
I would advise you to either "diarise" athe various dates 1 month ahead.
    Or keep a speeadsheet.
There are loads of other things that fall into this category so only keeping one spreadsheet is not a huge big deal.

It does seem to me that they advise you of the automatic renewal quite clearly from what you have put below.

You could set yourself up a tart alert email/text as well through this site.

I switch around every year and have always had to cancel the old one, however this year was very glad it renewed automatically as I was ill for a while and otherwise I'd have forgotten and been uninsured.

Thanks a lot for the reply. I had a feeling that they would be able to take payments from a cancelled credit card. Its a pity that there is no safeguard for credit card holders against such an unfair marketing tactics.

Looks like I have to write an official complaint to them.

Its strange that I bought two motor insurance policies with Aviva yesterday, one directly from them and one through RAC. The policy through the RAC was at £160 where as Aviava'a online quote for the same car was £185 online. I could cancel the auto renewal on the policy bought through RAC (Aviva the underlying insurer) but not on the policy bought directly from Aviva.

Majority of the credit card companies will only process a payment from cancelled card if the payment request is made within 1 month of the card cancellation. Claiming money more than one month after the card is cancelled is shady and FSA and FOS don't like it at all and you can challenge it.
