Ebay heavy item - collection only or freight?

Hi
i would like to sell a very large bbq that is sitting (unopened) in a pallet in my garage. i won it in a raffle - but live in a flat so cannot possibly use it!
i have never sold anything so large on ebay and i haven't a clue how to weigh it for freight quotes. i have tried to research weight online but am coming up with zero information
i know i can sell it with a "collection only" clause on ebay, but i am rather nervous about this method.
any advise from you experts would be much appreciated.

A courier would be more interested in the volumetric weight. LxWxH divided by 6000. Actual weight should be printed on the carton somewhere. You will get a much better price if you offer postage. Over 30KG gets pricey.

Palletised delivery costs vary depending on where in the uk you're delivering to, that's why you don't have to quote postage price for frieght items. One of the cheapest frieght providers it ETS online who can be found here:

    http://www.etsltd.co.uk/online/

As your item is palleted up ready to go you should have no problem with packaging it, you will just need to be in on the day the courier collects.

what i tend to do to reduce the 'how much to deliver to...?' emails is put the link to ets in the auction description, and say some thing like 'costs vary for courier delivery depending on where you are in the UK but start from around £45, if you would like an exact quote go to http://www.etsltd.co.uk/online/ and get a price for collection from (your postcode) '

Remember to tick the box to specify a tail lift, unless you also have a fork lift in your garage.

I would try to sell locally so its collected before i tried ebay. I have found gumtree brilliant for selling off bulky heavy items.

when selling on ebay something like this use the words that will be picked up here

    http://www.localbargainfinder.co.uk/

    like

(("cash on collection", "buyer must collect", "collection only"

https://www.gumtree.co.uk just find the nearest big town/city to you.

It's up to the OP, but collection only auctions limit the potential buyers, and as the item is packed ready to go all they would have to do to offer postage is book the item on line for collection if the buyer wanted delivery.

Depends what the item is worth, if the retail price is less than £100 then the cost of sending it by pallet would be too high relative to the value of the item, ie. if yu sold it fr half price, £50, it would cost another £50 to ship it so the buyer may as well go and buy a new one locally. If it costs £300 retail, then the buyer could pay £150 for the item, £50 for delivery and still be £100 better off.

Collection only does of course run into the paypal 'issue' that I'm sure we are all aware of *. If this is likely to fetch good money I would try local ads first where cash on collection can be insisted on.

    * if not aware of this issue then please check out the tips for new sellers post here:

thanks to you all for your great advise. the item is specialist and retails for a huge amount so i don't think i shall shift it with a postcard in the local newsagents! basilseal, many tks for link + info on pallet company, think this may be the way to go as it will also be tracked that way and i don't have to worry about whether someone is paying me with counterfiet twenties!
best wishes to you all :)
