Debit card fraud-Spain.

Just been to Spain, used my debit card ONCE in a bank cashpoint (didn't see anything suspicious, I am quite careful like that) and just seen on my internet statement £1300 worth of transactions in Spain after i'd returned home.Have canx my card, and reported to fraud dept....anything else I need do? Am I likely to get it back?

Nothing else to do for now and yes I would say that you stand a very good chance of getting a full refund.

I hope you do get your money back, but it depends on several things.

Where was the £1300 worth of transactions made?

Were you still in Spain when these transactions were made?

If these transactions were made a Spanish ATM's only, were the ATMs Chip & PIN compliant? If so was it the Chip that wa read vice the magstrip?

(There is a relatively easy way for your card issuer to check this as long as you've still got your card.

Be wary of the Banking Code article 10.2 which states: In some cases, we will need you to give us confirmation or evidence that you have not authorised a transaction).

    Some useful links:

PIN used as means of authenticating transactions (Click here)

Reporting Card Fraud (Click here). (Just for info)

    Things to do now:

Keep a full record of who you speak to and when. Send any mail recorded keeping a record.

In writing ask how the crime was perpetrated? Also ask your card issuer to confirm they've reported this to the Spanish Police.

Best of luck - I hope you don't need it.

James-yes,all transactions in Spain (well, all in euros anyway) and yes,all after we had left there, and yes we do still have both of our cards. There was noone behind me a cashpoint, and cashpoint looked/felt normal.....I'm quite savvy like that....

Good news, you should get your cash back. But I'd still do what I suggest.
