Parking ticket issued in wrong name

Hi i recently got a parking ticket from Greenwich council through my own idiocracy. However when they sent me the ticket through the post i ignored it because it wasn't addressed to me (i live in a shared house and assumed that it was for a previous tenant). The name was completely wrong, Mrs not Mr, a different first initial and my surname was 3 letters out. After a few months and several of these letters appearing, i opened them as i realised that they were probably meant for me. Anyway my £60 ticket is now a £250 ticket as I have failed to pay. They are threatening to send the baliff round. My question is can they actually do anything as if the baliffs do turn up the person they are after doesn't actually exist! Should i phone the council to try and sort this out or just leave it?
Any ideas?
Cheers

You pushed your luck a bit but technically could claim no documents received.
Follow my advice in the recent thread by 'jahcub'.
Be aware that the Council are not threatening - it is already HAPPENING if the bill is at £250. Act immediately.0 -

TEC won't be interested in that. don't start trying to explain. It is simply a case of did you receive the documents or not and you are making a sworn, witnessed statement subject to perjury laws.
You decide if Docs addressed to YOU were received or not.0 -
how can you act if you havent received any documents ?? If it were me i would keep binning the letters and when someone comes knocking i would say they dont live here and as far as my knowledge never have. hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world :cool:0

I take what you mean but -
The bailiff will know the name is not quite right having done checks. They won't care.
They will know that the warrant is probably invalid or may have had it corrected.
Whatever happens they will clamp and seize no matter what and then he has a fight to get money or goods back. Better to act now.
He is responding to notification from the bailiff so if he believes he effectively did not receive Council docs it is ok to say so.0 -
Nice one 'S'.
Shame again we are not getting updates.
I can only reiterate that you MUST act quickly!
(Herbie - there is another one not far below - 'jahcub'.0
