Moving toddler into a big bed!

Hi, just wondered if anybody had any advice on moving a toddler out of his cot into a big bed? We've decided to try and put him in a bed tonight as he has really outgrown his cot and is trying to climb over the sides! However he will not entertain it in the slightest. He won't get it the bed and is currently stood at his bedroom door screaming blue murder! Has anyone got any advice as in how to get him to stay in the bed? He hates change so i think a lot of the protesting is due to this! Thanks!

we had a cotbed so it was just a case of taking the sides down.
we did make a big thing of our DS choosing his own new duvet now that he was a big boy in a big bed.
does he have a favourite toy you could put in the bed to see how cosy it is?

Sorry I am not going to be a lot of help on this one.

My youngest moved into her bed this week, she helped me change her cot into a bed, then she went downstairs whilst I made it up, then I called her & brought her up & she hid in bed whilst her Daddy & Big Sister came to look at something and oohed & aahed over her being a big girl....she has gone to bed evening & lunchtime well since Thursday now. She was 2 in March.

Eldest moved into a propper bed in her new bedroom in the Jan before LO was born & again we made it exciting for her & she moved in no problem.

Try the big boy route as it may work.

Big boy route yep agree. Promise of a new duvet cover of his choice if he is a good boy and goes to bed nicely.
If you didnt used to read him a story in his cot, maybe say now he is in a big boy bed you can sit on the edge and read him a story each night.
    Good luck!

We did the big girl routine over a couple of weeks beforehand, building up to the actual day. Buying new covers etc.

However, with one of the kids they did not want to sleep in their new bed with the new duvet for the first few nights and wanted their old covers back!

If all else fails, try bribery.
  • oh god i daren't change his duvet, he'll go mad lol. He seems to have settled at the minute so will see how it goes. Fingers crossed he'll get used to it tonight then be ok tomorrow night. I've never known a child who hates change as much as he does! Thanks for the replies! x

Sorry if I am totally off the mark here but is he just a sensitive boy or does he have a condition such as autism which makes him hate change SO much? Sorry if that is a bit of a personal or intrusive question, or it may even flag a question to you which you had not considered if he is just on the spectrum?

Gonna post quickly before I delete it as I do not want to offend you!
  • He hasn't got anything that i know of. He's just sensitive and seems to be very set in his ways about certain things. I bought him new trainers as he's were way too small and it took me a month to get him to wear them as he didn't want to part with his old ones. Its silly little things but he has routines for everything, like in a morning he has to get the milk out of the fridge, then his plate out of the cupboard and such like. It amazes me as he's only just turned 2, but he seems quite bright for his age, and its like he knows what nearly everything is for and what to do with things, if that makes sense! Don't worry your post didn't offend me :)

Well it sounds a little like he could potentially have autism?asperger syndrome. My daughter has the latter, took about a year to get her in her room again after swapping cot for bed!
Sorry, we tried everything, dim lamp (she tried to boil water on it at 2, using a plastic saucepan and water from the bathroom!
It was a long slow process, now we have trouble getting her out of her pit in the morning!
