VW's in general are good - so too Skoda's. Focus? Yaris?

4 doors cars of the Golf size are very cheap, if you don't mind driving a pudding.

Bora, Toledo, Jetta, Focus 4dr etc...

Sorry to be pedantic but the Golf is a 5 door (or 3 door). Do you specifically want a medium sized 5 door hatchback, or do you really want a 4 door?
The Golf is a good 2nd hand buy, but not cheap because they hold their value well.
The 4 door Golf (the Bora) is very rare and you might not easily find a second hand one o/s the VW network.

Depends rather on what you want from your car. You haven't really narrowed down your options. Size/doors/engine size/diesel/petrol/budget?
Not clear why you mention a Mondeo, as this is a completely different size of car to the Golf. The Focus is the nearest comparison to the Golf (small hatchback).

like previous poster says Golf really hold their value well meaning they are more expensive 2nd hand buy .

Have you considered something like a Mazda 3 ( or 323 if you go older ) ,or a Honda Civic

You cannot beat Japanese for reliablity .
Better in my pocket than theirs :rotfl:
