Mt Everest

Has anyone any experience in traveling from Sakya to Everest base camp?

Also what are the restrictions on the Chinese Visa? Does it need to be multiple entry in order to travel to Tibet?

Thanks

I went to Tibet about 5 years ago - at that time (although counted as part of China) you could only get into Tibet on a group visa, so nominally you had to be on a tour. We did meet a couple of people though who were in a 'group' of one. I think it was more important that you had a guide with you.
You could only stay in designated tourist hotels and other places could be fined for taking you in - obviously the 'other places' were much cheaper - I don't know how much that situation has changed.
We were in a small group (one landcruiser) travelling from Lhasa back to Katmandu via base camp.
This is who we travelled with http://www.explore-himalaya.com/tibetoverlandtour.php and they have some useful information on their website.

Ha ha, not quite! Basically we're in Xian for a short while so i was wondering whether its worth nipping down to Tibet and ultimately to Everest to have a mooch around and see the almighty Everest.

I might be wrong, but I am sure I had read somewhere that the treck just to base camp was a really demanding one, even for adults. I would suggest doing a bit of research on this before taking it any further.

I went in late 2005. We booked the flights through our guesthouse in Chengdu and they arranged the "permit". Once in Lhasa 2 days later we were on our own. Easily managed to book some flights back to Zhongdian and arranged a 6 day jeep tour from a hotel in Lhasa. Was a bargain at 3800Yuan between 4.

Went from Lhasa to Gyantse, Shigatse, Shegar, Base Camp, Shigatse, Lhasa. We spent a night at Base Camp which was bloody freezing but good fun. One of the the group really struggled with the altitude and needed oxygen.

Since then I think the restrictions have changed quite a bit. I think you need a tour arranged before you get to Lhasa.

Tibet is a part of China so a single entry visa is fine :)
