can you have too much security?

Actually Windows firewall is fine for blocking inbound, thats all a router does in terms of firewall.
I have a watchguard firebox box on my network so I mostly know what I'm doing with hardware and software firewalls
The windows firewall is a software firewall at the end of the day and the XP one had so many holes in it, I just turned it off. Granted though, the one in Vista and 7 is much more configureable and not bad for a software firewall.
Still the OP didn't mention it in his "security" question so I was keen to see if he has one and if so what is he using?0 -
CCleaner is not really security, it is a disk cleaner (and a good one).
You can have as many anti-spyware progs as you like, they should not conflict.
But you should only run a single AV program, which you are. Unfortunately it's AVG...best course would be to remove AVG and install Kaspersky (currently free with Barclays online banking), or use Avira (free).
Lots of problems reported on this forum with AVG in the last 6 months, it's not what it was.[/QUOTE
Please can I jump in on this query. I am trying to install Kapersky onto my laptop. It installs to the point where it tells me to run the programme then says it cant as I have AVG 8 and I need to uninstall it. Problem is I cant find it on my list of installed prorammes . Does anybody know where it might be hiding? You might have to bear with me as teenage son has left home to go to college and left me with this contraption. Speak to me in middleage lady language!!0 -

Download and run the AVG removal tool:

Them red boxes are a bit OTT for a home network though don't you think
I mean when routers come with Packet Filtering, Stateful Packet Inspection, Denial of Service Prevention, DMZ and well, obviously NAT. As long as nothing getting in I'm happy. 0 -
Thankyou davidmt83. Kaspersky is now installed but its now telling me my databases are out of date and my computer is at risk. Any ideas0

You just need to update the virus definations. I've never used it but try right clicking the icon in the system tray, does it give you the option to Update? If not then open it and go to something like Tools -> Update...0 -
Thanks davidmt83. Kaspersky is now up and running.0
